Family Philanthropy Making an Impact

Family Philanthropy Making an Impact

Ken and his wife Jo moved to Santa Barbara 14 years ago to raise their family. An active volunteer and an incubator of ideas, Ken is an articulate, compassionate and talented person who has been giving to his community and building philanthropy since the day he arrived. He is an exceptional leader, inspiring people to be involved with philanthropy, from those with modest means to those with great wealth. He also inspires nonprofits to do what they do even better and more efficiently, while educating the next generation on how to give back.

"Like many young families, we share the challenge of raising kids with good values in an affluent community. Philanthropy has provided us with an opportunity to clarify our values and put them to work in your community. The Santa Barbara Foundation has helped us make those investments with greater impact and a higher level of fulfillment.

Raising our two kids here, my wife Jo and I decided to take an intentional giving approach to their allowance, putting aside some money each month for a good cause. At the end of each year, our children would decide where the giving portion of their allowance would go – we would take them to the organizations of their choice so they could see philanthropy in action and how their contribution might benefit their community. They have visited community health clinics, a pre-school for the children of homeless families, and a hospice, for example. We've always instilled a sense that so many important things in our community are enabled solely because so many in the community have chosen to give back, and that through giving you can learn so much about your community and its needs, for today and tomorrow.

So, the Santa Barbara Foundation has been a tool for us to give back to a place we love. As a citizen, there is tremendous personal payoff in knowing more about your community and feeling fulfilled by a meaningful contribution to its enhancement. The community foundation is a key institution – a catalyst really – that makes collective philanthropy work. I have learned so much by being involved in the Foundation and by working along side others who are active in community as well. I am thrilled to support my community foundation and content to know that they will be here to educate and empower the next generation as well."
