A Lifetime of Philanthropy

Raised in Sacramento of Irish and Portuguese descent, Patty attended UCSB, where she met her husband, Terry. It did not take long for her to begin making a positive impact on our community. Patty has been a full-time community volunteer since 1967, helping people in need through an impressive list of nonprofits: Planned Parenthood, Junior League of Santa Barbara, Family Service Agency, Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics and the Women's Fund of Santa Barbara. In 1996, she was named Woman of the Year and in 2004, Health Care Hero.

Patty joined the Santa Barbara Foundation Board of Trustees in 1999. She served and chaired many important committees before retiring after nine years in 2008. Patty and her husband grow avocados in Carpinteria and own and run two trucking companies that transport produce and flowers throughout California.

Patty and Terry recently established the Marjorie Kenyon Fund at the Foundation – a non-endowed donor advised fund in memory of Terry's mother. "We had appreciated stock and wanted to ensure that all the proceeds would flow to local nonprofits. A Donor Advised Fund offers a simple and satisfying way to enhance your philanthropy and do more for the causes you think are critically important in the community, improving quality of life for everyone. We are able to concentrate on the nonprofit organizations we fund while the Foundation takes care of all the paperwork.

We chose the non-endowed fund because it allows us the flexibility of how and when we grow our fund. We know that community foundations can be counted on to do the right thing; their mission is to make philanthropy work.
